Swinglet CAM

Project description

Location: National Parc of Banco, Abidjan, Ivory Coast; Forest of Tanoe and palm plantations, Nouamou (50km of Ghana); Reserve of Lamto (Savanna); Adiopodoumé forest
Challenge:
evaluate the feasibility of dense forest cartography (botanic) and its limits; cartography of non-forestry zones
Difficulties:
In dense humid forest the surface covered by the swinglet CAM is limited to 1-2km2 (due to image high overlap and required image resolution), which limits the total area that can be covered as take-off and landing spaces are missing.
Size:
multiple areas of different sizes
Flight time:
> 10 flights to cover multiple areas, typically at 270-400m altitude over ground
Precision:
GSD of 10cm (Reserve of Lamto) and of 15cm (dense forest)

Experience and result

1. National Parc of Banco, Abidjan, Ivory Coast: R-Pod was able to document the extend and dynamic of illegal human occupations by garage owners in the North of the National Park. The occupied zone along an electrical power line, which is cutting the forest into half, was measured to be about 100m large.

Experience and result
Triangle of Sangbé, progression of human occupation in the North of the National Park of Banco

2. Forest of Tanoe and palm plantations, Nouamou: The Forest and palm plantations were mapped at standard parameters of 80% longitudinal and 60% lateral image overlap (flight altitude over ground: 300m) allowing automated assembly of the images with Postflight. The resulting Orthomosaic documents the extend of plantations and allows determination of the percentage of left forest in this zone. It also promises to be interesting for botanists to determine tree varieties as this bog forest is otherwise very difficulty accessible.

Experience and result
Bog forest and oil palm cultures near Nouamou

3. Reserve of Lamto: The collected images allowed a Orthomosaic generation with a GSD of 10cm, which was used to classify and count certain plant species. Further differentiation of diverse Savanna in relation to the Topography was difficulty during this time of the year (November) as all Savanna were in full vegetation. Still the images were of high interest to document a project monitoring the occupied surface by forest.

Experience and result
Extract of the Reserve of Lamto, with the French research center

4. Adiopodoumé forest - Automatic image processing over dense forest was found to require an flight altitude of around 400m over ground and 90% longitudinal & 75% lateral overlap. If altitude is reduced to 270m the lateral overlap must be augmented to 80% in order to still allow automatic processing of the images. Further the experience showed that a too detailed DEM over forest disturbs the projection of the tree images and produces distorted crowns. Therefore a simplyfied DEM needs to be used for this specific projection, in order to keep results interpretable for Botanists.

Experience and result
phenomena of tree "timidity"
